Are You Paying Too Much for Phone Service? Why Not Lower Your Bill With VoIP?

You might have already heard of the term Voice Over Internet Protocol (or VoIP for short) and how everyone is buzzing about how much better this is than your regular phone service. The only problem is that most people don't take the time to explain what a VoIP system is, how it works and why it might be a better option for you when compared to a landline telephone.

It used to be the case that VoIP telephone systems were used primarily in businesses. In fact, for many businesses, a VoIP system can dramatically reduce the amount of hardware, maintenance and overall monthly cost for having multiple phone lines. Well it turns out that there are quite a few benefits for the residential consumer switching to VoIP also.

The biggest factor to draw people to VoIP calling is the lower rates. Some calls are completely free but even calls that they charge you for, such as some long distance calls and most international calls, are much cheaper than what your local phone company can offer.

Some systems work right from your computer, allowing you to make computer-to-phone or even computer-to-computer calls right from your desk. However, the typical home user will want a traditional handset rather than being tied down to a desktop computer.

The good thing is that there are specially made handsets that work great with VoIP systems. In addition, you can save even more money by simply using an adapter with your regular phone. That way, you will pay a minimal amount to get set up with a VoIP calling service and can still use your existing phones throughout your house.

It works right through your existing Internet connection but it won't impact your ability to get online, so you can rest assured you'll be able to talk and surf the web at the same time. And since it works through the Internet, you can place and receive calls anywhere in the world as long as you have an Internet connection, even when you're out of town or even out of the country. And the person calling you won't know the difference, either while they're on the phone or when they get their bill.

VoIP is ideal for households that have several teenage children or perhaps a home-based business in the house. In addition to the low calling plans most companies offer, you can also enjoy a host of built-in features that your local telephone company would probably charge for. In fact, most VoIP companies include features like caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding and other extras as a standard part of each calling plan.

If you're interested in saving money on your next phone bill, consider making the switch to VoIP. Start today by looking into the various companies offering VoIP service and comparing their plans to see which is the best offer to meet your calling needs.
